Got Ideas Transition them from Paper to Real-world Possibilities with a Great Plan

Got Ideas Transition them from Paper to Real-world Possibilities with a Great Plan Got Ideas Transition them from Paper to Real-world Possibilities with a Great Plan The first step is to couch your idea in a thought out argument highlighting the benefits of the idea with hard evidence and a well-organized written document. Your best bet is to think more like an academician than an office professional. Harkening back to those halcyon days of college should quickly draw up memories of thesis construction, credible sources, and strong supporting arguments. The approach you take when discussing and academic topic is the same one you should use in the workplace. Your babo is only going to recognize your idea as worthy if you supply the research that proves its value. You want to avoid dry lists of facts so focus on the most relevant data and keep your presentation succinct to avoid the risk of losing your bosss interest and attention. With credible data, show how your idea can be feasibl y implemented and demonstrate its efficacy with salient statistics and other impactful data. After successfully exhibiting the fundamental strength of your idea, its time to sell it in terms of competitive advantage. Zero in on the practices of your companys prime competitors and show what they do to achieve results. Showing how your idea blows away any advantage the competition may have will quickly gain you the attention and traction you need to get your boss on board. Finally, if all else fails (or just to further bolster your presentation), tie your idea to the bottom line. Make money a regular reference point and show how your idea will add value to the company in the short and long terms. Promising increased revenue will almost certainly at least get your suggestions a look and will possibly open the resource purse up further when the senior executives decide to invest in your idea. Many times the financial benefits may not be especially apparent, but simply proving that your id ea could lead to higher sales, improved customer satisfaction, or more efficient (read less expensive) operations will go a long way to gaining much needed high-level support.Especially if your idea is for a project you are passionate about and want to remain involved with for a long time, get your thoughts out there now. Use the steps above to ensure your idea isnt eventually stolen or your responsibilities delegated to someone else. And once your idea has gained a stronghold of support from the higher-ups, you can get started on the next step execution.

The Best Online Tools for Executives

The Best Online Tools for ExecutivesThe Best Online Tools for ExecutivesThe latest verbunden products let you network like never before and theyre easy to use.By Dean Guadagni and Susan HanshawThere is no denying it The new online communications capabilities dubbed Web 2.0 are changing the way companies interact with customers, conduct geschftliches miteinander and leverage their brands on a global basis. The social-networking capabilities Web 2.0 introduced have fundamentally altered the way companies search for talent.Yet many executive job seekers hesitate to adopt Web 2.0 and social- media strategies because they lack information about the tools, their reach, their value and how best to use them.Today well shine a light on what works for $100K+ executives. The following is a brief look at what we believe to be the most important tools available to executive job seekers today and a few tips on how to best put them to use.1. LinkedInLinkedIn is a tremendously popular social network for business users. With more than 40 million registered users, LinkedIn was ranked one of the top five social- media sites for traffic growth in Q1 of 2009 by Compete.com. (How much traffic puts a site in the top five? Analytics firm comScore.com estimates Linkedin receives 16 million unique visits per month.)LinkedIn is based on an architecture of visibility. Simply stated, LinkedIn allows you to see your networking partners network of connections. This visibility creates a number of opportunities for job searches via an extended network focused on business.Tip Use the Status Update box.One of the biggest and most common mistakes LinkedIn users make is doing nothing more than collecting connections. Among the quickest and most effective tools for networking with your direct connections is the Network Updates box, a.k.a What are you working on now? These messages get distributed to your direct connections as updates on their home pages, enabling you to keep yourself top of mind wi th your connections.2. BlogsBlogging is a multi faceted toolfor your executive job search. The term blog is a contraction of the words Web and log. In a nutshell, blogs are easy-to-use Web sites that display articles in reverse-chronological order. Because theyre such an accessible, powerful way to get your message out, blogs provide job seekers with extremely effective digital calling cards. You can build and own your writing platform, publish content that reflects your expertise and create a communications tool that will support you throughout your career.Unlike social networks, which are owned by others and require you to follow their rules of engagement, bloggers have the opportunity to create their own publications, write their own rulebooks and establish their own formats with their target markets and goals as parameters.Tip Just start. The first and simplest tip is to adopt blogging as an important tool and step into the technology.3. TwitterTwitter is a social network that let s users publish short messages with a limit of 140 character s. Although Twitters registered user count, rumored at 10 million, is far below that of facebook incs purported 200 million -plus, Twitter is the fastest- growing social network according to Compete.com. From March 2008 to March 2009, Twitter grew 2,565 percent.Twitter has enjoyed amazing growth and popularity for two reasons. First, it is an easy tool to use. Twitter requires very little technical savvy, and it requires you to do far less writing than a blog would.Second, Twitter provides valuable features like instantaneous broadcasting and connectivity. This makes Twitter a major component of any social- media campaign.Tip Tune into conversations. To hear whats going on in any conversation hosted on the site, just make a list of keywords that would identify topics youre interested in. Twitter is behind the growing popularity of the new search frontier semantic conversational search. Semantic search lets people search for conversations, in real time, relevant to their keywords. Unlike a Google search, which can return links to outdated information, Twitter has a third- party, open- source search tool called Twazzup.com, which identifies relevant conversations.4. FacebookFacebook currently reigns as the largest social network with more than 200 million active users. Facebook reports that 100 million users spend more than 4 billion minutes on the site every day. Todays fastest- growing population segment is age 35 and older that groups spending power is attracting businesses of all sizes to develop a Facebook presence.Tip Control your privacy settings. Many executive job seekers are concerned about how to draw a line between personal and professional networking, especially with networks like Facebook that may encompass both sorts of contacts. Most people dont realize how much control they have over who sees what. In fact, Facebook provides settings that let you select who can see the various sections of your profile and your update activity.Whats important is that youre comfortable using whatever tools work for you. This debriefing on Web 2.0 tools is a start, but youll have to take the plunge to get the hang of it. Use this information to build an online job -search campaign around your offline search today.Dean Guadagni and Susan Hanshaw are co-founders of Inner Architect, a social- media marketing firm that works with businesses and individuals to use Web 2.0 and social-media tools to get close to their customers, engage with their target audience, and succeed in building a vibrant community or professional network. What to Say When Someone Throws You Under the Bus - The Muse

What to Say When Someone Throws You Under the Bus - The MuseWhat to Say When Someone Throws You Under the Bus Youre going about your day and everything seems fine, until someone on your team says, Hey, dont look at me, it was probably her fault And suddenly you cant think about anything else because youve just been thrown under the bus for something youre sure you didnt do, which makes you want to pull your hair out and head home for the rest of the day. Most, if not all, people have experienced this finger pointing. There are a lot of ways you could respond to someone when they try to make you the scapegoat, but some approaches are more effective than others. And if were being honest, the scenarios we daydream about in which we scream at the other person until they beg for forgiveness arent actually good for anyone. But there are a few other things you can do in response.1. Take a Short Walk to Clear Your ThoughtsI know this might sound basic, but thats by plan. I bet you can think of a handful of times in which you responded to this situation by running and venting to the first person you could find. And then you located another person to vent to. And so on.Airing our frustrations is healthy, but much like most things that make us feel better temporarily, its best done in moderation. And you already know this, but its also best done with someone you dont work with.Im not telling you not to complain to someone you trust (in fact, its a good idea to some extent). But I am suggesting that you try spending a few minutes by yourself first. If you have the time, get out of the building and grab some fresh air. If not, take a lap around the office. Let yourself be angry. And dont let yourself go back to your desk until youve calmed down a little bit. Then, and only then, should you reach out to someone else. (But again, not a co-worker.)2. Schedule Some Time for the Two of You to ChatIf you really want to move on from being thrown under the bus, there are two painfu l truths youll face. For starters, youre bound to have a really tough conversation with your co-worker. And more importantly, you need to remember that even the nicest tone could make that person feel like youre attacking them. Unless that person knows to expect a tough conversation in advance. Reach out to them and ask if they have a few minutes to chat later that day about the meeting earlier (or wherever it was that the issue took place- be it in person or over email), or if youre still fuming, later in the week. Unless youre dealing with the most self-involved person ever, chances are they know what you want to talk about- and will be amenable to clearing the air. In fact, they might feel a bit guilty already. 3. Avoid Starting the Conversation by Assuming the WorstYou could easily start a conversation with this person by saying, You made me look bad in front of everyone and I hope you get fired for it. And if you do, youll probably end up in a screaming match that results in ne ither of you feeling great about anything. So when the conversation rolls around, try to assume the best, at least at the beginning. Theres no guarantee this approach will work, but it will absolutely be a much more productive conversation than it would be if you tried playing the blame game. When you sit down with your co-worker, make it your default to put things in terms of how they made you feel, rather than what you noticed he or she did. Try statements like, I felt like my work was being diminished because of the way you communicated my role in our project or I felt like the scapegoat when you blamed me in the meeting for the design delay. For most people, hearing how their actions affected you is much more powerful than being reprimanded. Think about it The former puts them in your shoes and the latter puts them on the defensive. Its never fun to get thrown under the bus at work. But when it happens to you, dont jump to conclusions. Theres a decent chance that colleague of yo urs didnt mean for it to happen that way. And even if it was malicious, youll feel much better about the entire situation if you confront it head on. Odds are the persons less likely to do it again if it means having a grown-up conversation about it.

If you prepare for a Skype interview in advance, it can also be less stressful than interviewing in person. 106 Watch Now 7 Tips for a Professional Skype Interview Tips for Preparing for a Skype Interview There are a few steps you need to take before your Skype interview in order to be prepar ed Download the software at least a few days in advance of the interview. While there are Skype platforms that cost money, it is generally free to video chat with other Skype users.Create a professional username. With Skype, people can search for you by your first and last name. Make sure you dont use any unprofessional nicknames in your Skype name.Do a test call or two with your friends or family. Make sure you can easily make and answer a call. Check to see that your microphone and camera work. Practice getting comfortable looking at the camera for long periods of time. Adjust the lighting.Be sure you have enough lighting to avoid any heavy shadows. However, make sure the lighting is not too bright either, because that can wash you out or even blind the interviewer. You can figure out lighting issues during your practice interview.Check the hintergrund. While you are the focus of the Skype video, remember that the interviewer will also see whatever is behind you. Before the interv iew, select your backdrop. Pick a bare wall to ensure there are no distractions or color clashes with your attire. If you need to be in a public space, find the quietest area and be sure to wear a headset to help block out background noises. If you live with other people (or pets) and are doing the interview in your home, tell everyone you live with not to interrupt you during the interview. Test everything again an hour or two before the interview. Make sure the microphone and camera work to ensure everything is in order.Prep in the traditional sense as well. Do the kind of preparation you would do for any interview. Review your resume and cover letter, practice answering common interview questions ahead of time, and research the company.Know who is contacting whom. Make sure that, before the interview, you know whether you are supposed to reach out to the interviewer or vice versa. If you are supposed to reach out, ask for their Skype name ahead of time. Before the interview, find the person on Skype, and add him or her to your list of contacts. This will make it easier to contact them if you are asked to. Tips for a Successful Skype Interview There are also things you can do during the Skype interview to make sure you look polished and professional Smile and focus. In many ways, a Skype interview is just like any other interview. For example, whether you are interviewing in person or via Skype, remember to smile Smiling will ensure that you look engaged and enthusiastic about the position you are interviewing for. Remember to focus your eyes on the camera not on the persons face to make it look like youre making direct eye contact. Scanning the room or looking away from the camera too much can make you appear untrustworthy or indifferent. The interviewer deserves your full attention, so stay focused and friendly. Smiling can also help you remain calm. Another way to focus is to exit out of any other applications on your computer. You dont want any po p-up windows distracting you during the interview. Dress to impress.Just because you are interviewing in a casual setting does not mean your attire should match your surroundings. Wear what you would wear to any in-person interview. This will help you feel mora confident as well. Dress in a way that reflects both your personality and the position for which you are interviewing. Just watch out for specific colors, like red and hot colors, which can be too bright for the camera. Crazy patterns may also clash with the camera. Stick with solids. Put your best face forward.Again, treat the Skype interview as any in-person interview when it comes to your appearance. For women, it is fine to wear a bit more makeup than you would in an in-person interview, as it doesnt show up as well on camera. Wear the amount that makes you feel confident. You can spot conceal, apply highlighter under your eyes, use a brown eyeliner and mascara to make your eyes pop, and/or put on a dab of pink lipstick. You can wear jewelry, but make sure it isnt too flashy or distracting (for example, avoid jangly, noisy earrings). For both men and women, make sure your hair is well groomed. Bring notes, paper, and a pen.It is useful to have a few brief bullet points in front of you about what you want to highlight during the interview. Sometimes, conversations can go in unexpected directions, and it can be easy to forget your talking points. This way, you can scan your notes without losing direct contact with the interviewer. However, make sure to practice answering interview questions in advance, so that you dont stare down at your paper. Remember that eye contact is important. Keep a blank paper and a pen handy to jot down anything youd like to comment on later in the conversation. You might also keep a glass of water handy in case your throat gets dry. However, dont keep it too close to your computer you dont want to spill and have a technical malfunction Dont panic if technology fails. With any technology, there is the chance for a glitch. When you start the interview, you might want to make sure the person can see and hear you. If anything goes wrong during the interview, dont panic. Remain calm and friendly. You might suggest hanging up and trying the video call again. Make sure you have the persons email address or phone number, so you can contact them in case you completely lose each other. The right body language is key.You do not want your interviewer assuming his or her screen froze at any point during the interview. Therefore, make sure your body language expresses that you are engaged. As the other party speaks, subtly nod your head to express your understanding or agreement. And as you speak, lean forward and use subtle hand gestures to add enthusiasm to what you are saying. But dont over-do it. To avoid looking blurry on screen, dont make any dramatic hand gestures or nod your head too quickly. Also be sure to sit up straight. This will not only make you lo ok more professional, but it will also help you to feel confident.

How Taylor Guitar Built Its Corporate Brand

How Taylor Guitar Built Its Corporate BrandHow Taylor Guitar Built Its Corporate BrandHow Taylor Guitar Built Its Corporate Brand Taylor, Co-founder and President, Taylor Guitars and author of Guitar Lessons A Lifes Jurney Turning Passion into Business.Question Who likes a guitar? Answer Everyone. When I made my first guitar as a kid I welches pretty proud of it. I was one of those kids you might not have noticed, because I was spending my time in woodshop rather than at dances.I wasnt popular rather, I was a total dork. However, I emerged from that woodshop class with a guitar that Id made and a desire to go forward with that as a career. There was nobody to guide me in the process. I was alone in that quest, but I jumped in anyway, starting a small shop with my partner, putting my hand to chisel, and soon began turning out a guitar every week or two.Question Who wants to buy a guitar from a company theyve never heard of? Answer Almost nobody.I would show people my guitars and theyd like them because everyone likes a guitar In fact, people were amazed when they saw my guitars. But for them to part with their money required a lot of confidence on their part. More often than not a person would admire ur work only to purchase something with a brand name instead.Building our Company BrandA lot has changed since those days of start-up obscurity and lack of know-how. Today, Taylor Guitars is in the lead-selling position of acoustic guitars in the United States we produce hundreds of guitars each day. ur company brandis well known beyond the borders of the guitar playing public, enjoying fans of all types. In fact, people know our company for many things our business practices, environmental work, employee relations, local presence, celebrity players, as well as our guitars. How does one go from start up to industry leader? In my experience is takes work on all levels. I like to think of it as a three-legged stool, which needs all three legs to be strong. Those legs co uld be thought of as Production, Sales, and Finance. But to strengthen each leg, you need to pay attention to more.Under the Production leg Employee Relations,Quality Control, Training and RD.Under the Sales leg Marketing Planning, Company Branding, Public Relations and Customer Service.Under theFinance leg Fiscal Responsibility, Customer Credit, Vendor Relationships, Employee Benefits and Community Service. At the start, these numerous details were not on the radar, but certainly the basic three were. Without our focusing on all three areas of sales, production, or finance, we failed. It took dedication to achieve success in each of these areas as we sword-fought our way through the first several years of our company. We scored sales wherever we could, one guitar at a time, and made them one at a time, counting each penny as we went. But with each year we strived to add detail to each of these areas to distinguish our corporate brandfrom other makers of guitars and to slowly build ou r brand. Our first order of attention has always been the guitars, which remains true even today. Without a great guitar, sales are nearly impossible to sustain. But without sales, great guitars are never owned by players, and without profit, the whole idea of being in business is meaningless.Differentiating Product and BrandAs Taylor Guitars matured with each year we began to indentify ways to differentiate our product and our brand from other players in our industry. Its important that you understand that your product and your brand play different roles. Your product is more narrowly focused its the hard thing you sell. Your brand is the soft part its what the company means to people. Its also what people buy in to, apart from the product, and it is equally valuable. In fact, many people would argue that your company brand is more valuable than the product. Even the Bible says in the book of Proverbs, A good name is more desirable than great riches. We started with the obvious, which for us was making guitars that played better and sounded different. I use the word different for sound, because sound quality is subjective. Soon, recording engineers and players began to use the word better when they described our guitars sound. We added electric pickups when it was unpopular to do on an acoustic guitar. Eventually the market came our direction, with nearly every guitar player demanding a guitar that played well and that could be amplified.Today, we are the leader in that market, and it has become the largest segment of the market.A few years after we learned to cover the basics, we began to build our company branding. We ran advertisements that were completely different than anyone else in the industry those ads spoke to the feeling that people derive from playing and loving guitars. Those people began to like our company as well as our guitars. We then extended that branding into our customers lives with our magazine, Wood Steel, and with dealer events, festival s and factory tours. Hospitality became our middle name. Soon the spouses of guitar players understood what their husband or wife loved about their Taylor guitar, because they felt included as well. From the food server at the restaurant who sees the name on our credit card, to the purchaser of a new guitar, from the wood-cutting families in India, to the printer of our magazine, from the customer to the retailer, to GE Capital who helps the retailer put more guitars in stock, we strive to serve and include everyone in our story and make it fun and rewarding for them. They love itWith everyone on your side, its easier to succeed.Author BioBob Taylor (El Cajon, CA) is the co-founder and President of the world-famous organization Taylor Guitarswhich is based in California and employs over 550 people and is author of the book, Guitar Lessons A Lifes Journey Turning Passion into Business(Wiley, 2011).
